Liverpool announce astonishing world record deal for new signing
Liverpool have announced the blockbuster arrival of Roma star Alisson for a world record fee for a goalkeeper.
Alisson is the fourth signing Liverpool have made this summer and the most expensive, taking their spending spree beyond the £150m mark.
Jurgen Klopp has been chasing Alisson's signature for the best part of 12 months and stepped up the club's pursuit in the wake of Loris Karius' performance in last season's Champions League final.
Chelsea were also interested in signing the Brazil international but Liverpool have wrapped up the 25-year-old on a six-year deal until 2024.
The Merseyside outfit have agreed to pay Roma an initial £56m plus a further £9m in add-ons for Alisson, surpassing the £34.7m fee Manchester City shelled out to sign Ederson from Benfica 12 months ago.
"I’m really happy, it’s a dream come true to wear to such a prestigious shirt for a club of this size that is used to always winning,” Alisson told the club’s official website.
“In terms of my life and my career, it’s a huge step for me being part of this club and this family. You can be certain that I’ll give my all.”
Alisson has emerged as one of the best goalkeepers in the world in the last 12 months and Liverpool's decision to break the bank for his signature is a real statement of intent from Klopp.
The Liverpool manager has now assembled a team capable of challenging Manchester City for the Premier League title next season and one piece of silverware should be a minimum requirement.
Alisson finished the last campaign as the highest WhoScored rated goalkeeper in Europe’s top five leagues (6.99).
