Palace confirm Townsend signing

Crystal Palace have announced they have signed Andros Townsend from Newcastle after matching his £13.5m release clause.

Townsend, 28, only joined Newcastle from Tottenham at the start of the year but failed to ensure their Premier League status last season despite impressing on the pitch.

The England international was one of three players dropped by Roy Hodgson for his Euro 2016 squad but has made an immediate return to the top-flight after Palace beat off competition from their rivals to sign the winger.

“I’m extremely delighted. I had chats with the manager and the chairman before I signed and I’m pleased to be a part of Crystal Palace’s future,” Townsend told Palace’s official website.

“By the sounds of things it’s going to be a bright one and I can’t wait to get started.”

Townsend finished as Newcastle’s highest rated player in the Premier League (7.35) after playing a direct hand in sex league goals (four goals, two assists) in 13 appearances.
