West Ham set to pip Everton to Championship starlet

Leeds United full-back Sam Byram is undergoing his medical at West Ham ahead of a £3.75m switch to the Boleyn Ground, according to the London Evening Standard.

Everton had been in the driving seat to sign the 22-year-old, who is available at a cut-price with just six months remaining on his current deal at Leeds, but Byram asked to have time to think about his options when the Hammers entered the race.

Slaven Bilic’s team hoped to make a move for Byram in the summer but have been forced to act now following Everton’s interest and they will look to loan out the young starlet for the remainder of the season to gain first-team experience.

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has already admitted the club have reached their wage cap, which means someone is likely to make way this month, with Mauro Zarate and Nikica Jelavic touted as those likely to be sacrificed.

Byram, who is a left-back by trade, has been regularly deployed in advanced positions this season and has flourished with three goals to his name. No Leeds player, however, has picked up more bookings than the youngster this season (7), who has only started 16 league games.
