Liverpool agree deal to sign Bundesliga defender

Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Joel Matip on a free transfer at the end of the season, according to Sky Sports.

Matip, 24, has been free to discuss terms with foreign clubs since the start of the year when he entered the final six months of his current deal with Schalke.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has reportedly been an admirer of the central defender dating back to his days as Borussia Dortmund manager and now appears to have got his man, who is seeking a new challenge after 16 years in Gelsenkirchen.

The Reds signed Steven Caulker on loan until the end of the season earlier this week, after seeing four senior central defenders suffer from injury at once.

However, with Caulker’s arrival only thought to be a short-term solution, it is Matip who appears to be the long-term defender for Klopp.

The Cameroonian international has made at least nine more interceptions than any other Schalke teammate this season (56).
