Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed Bastian Schweinsteiger has been ruled out for the rest of the season and is a doubt for the Euros in the summer.
Schweinsteiger, 30, has endured a frustrating maiden campaign for United since making the switch from Bayern Munich last summer.
The Germany captain has struggled for form and fitness so far and has already played his last match of the season after picking up a knee injury whilst on international duty last month.
“I don’t think Schweinsteiger shall play this season – I think, next season, he is prepared,” Van Gaal is quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph. “Maybe he is prepared for the European Championship, I cannot predict.
“It is possible, but then that is also in our favour because then he is fit for the new competition.”
Even if fit, there is a chance Schweinsteiger would not even have made Germany’s starting XI following his poor campaign.
Indeed, United have a far superior win ratio without Schweinsteiger in the starting XI (52.6%) compared to with him (38.5%) in the Premier League this season.
