Premier League ace confirms Manchester United interest
Harry Maguire has revealed Leicester categorically ruled out his departure in the summer following interest from Manchester United.
United manager Jose Mourinho was desperate to sign a new centre-back in pre-season and Maguire was one of four targets pursued by the Red Devils.
Maguire landed on United’s radar after a hugely impressive 2018 World Cup campaign but ended up staying at Leicester.
The 25-year-old has confirmed United’s interest but respected Leicester’s stance on his future after only 12 months at the club.
“Obviously going into a World Cup there was always going to be [interest] if we were successful as we were there were always going to be players who come under interest that is part and parcel of the game,” he told The Daily Mirror.
“I spoke with Leicester after a bit of interest from clubs, and they reiterated that I wasn’t for sale and I respected that decision.
“They gave me an opportunity to play in the Premier League, when I had just been relegated with Hull. They gave me that opportunity and it is a club I am really enjoying my time at. I am playing week in week out which is important to me.
“They have given me the platform to play at the World Cup so I feel I owe them and I respect that decision. Now I am looking forward to the season.”
United failed to sign a centre-back in the end and their defensive problems have only been highlighted during the first four games of the season.
Since the start of last season, Maguire has won possession in the defensive third more times than any other Premier League player (195).
