Leicester midfielder named in Hodgson’s England squad

Roy Hodgson has handed a first England call-up to Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater in his squad for upcoming friendlies against Germany and the Netherlands.

The England manager has also included Danny Rose, Ryan Bertrand in his 24-man squad while there is no place for captain Wayne Rooney, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury and expected to return after the international break.

However, the biggest news is the inclusion of Drinkwater, who at 26, is getting rightful recognition for what has been an outstanding campaign.

It has been a hard fought battle to get back to the top of English football since being let go from Manchester United in 2012 but his performances alongside N’Golo Kante have been one of the main reasons behind Leicester’s remarkable season.

In fact, no player in the Premier League has won more possession in the midfield third than Drinkwater this season (146). If he can replicate that sort of form in an England shirt then he could prove an invaluable asset for Hodgson at the Euros when England need to alleviate pressure against the bigger teams.
