Liverpool ponder club-record bid for Bayern midfielder

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is keen on a reunion with Bayern Munich midfielder Mario Gotze at Anfield and is working to secure a club-record £37m deal, according to German newspaper Bild.

Gotze, 23, flourished under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund before sealing a big money move to Bayern in 2013.

The Germany international is currently sidelined until February through injury but there have been murmurs of discontent since the start of the season from Gotze’s camp at Bayern.

Gotze started the campaign out of favour under Pep Guardiola and there had been suggestions he would quit the Bavarian club until a long-term injury ruled him out of action in October.

A January move would seem unlikely with the player currently out of action for the foreseeable future, but it is widely accepted that Gotze could move on at the end of the season with Liverpool leading the charge.

However, much could change when incoming manager Carlo Ancelotti officially takes over from Guardiola.

Gotze, who scored the winning goal in the World Cup final against Argentina in 2014, has only started four league matches this season, making a further three appearances from the substitutes’ bench.
