Chelsea midfielder to decide future in January

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has revealed he will make a decision on his future in January.

Mikel, 29, is yet to feature in the Premier League under Antonio Conte this season and with his current deal due to expire at the end of the season his time at Stamford Bridge appears to be coming to an end.

The Nigeria international has spent the last 10 years at Chelsea following a £17m move from Norwegian side FK Lyn and will be free to talk to foreign clubs in January when he enters the final six months of his current deal.

“We will wait and see what happens in January,” Mikel told Sky Sports. “For the first time in my career, this is happening to me and I have to stand up and deal with it. It is what it is but I’m training hard every day and always wish the team the best and I am happy we are doing well.

“I’ve been at Chelsea a long time. Managers come and go. These things happen in football so we will have to make that decision when January comes.”

Despite spending a decade at Chelsea, Mikel has never been a regular in the starting XI throughout this time, although failing to make a single appearance is even beyond Mikel’s usual career.

Since August 2009 Mikel has made more substitute appearances in the Premier League for Chelsea than any other player (45).
