West Ham striker on radar of England manager

Andy Carroll is set for an audition in front of England manager Gareth Southgate on Saturday as the West Ham striker closes in on a return to international football, reports The Daily Mail.

The 28-year-old’s failure to stay fit over the course of his career has limited the West Ham No.9 to just nine international caps since making his England debut seven years ago.

Carroll missed four months of the season at the start of the campaign with a knee injury but has now scored four goals in his last four appearances and is on the cusp of forcing his way back into contention with the Three Lions.

The former Liverpool striker limped off after 56 minutes of West Ham’s 3-1 win over Southampton at the weekend with a groin injury that he has been carrying for weeks but Carroll has since returned to training and is set to start against West Brom on Saturday.

Southgate is due to be in attendance at the London Stadium as he continues to scout players ahead of his next squad selection, which isn’t due until March for when England play Germany in a friendly followed by a World Cup qualifier against Lithuania.

Of English players to have scored more than one goal in the Premier League this season, only Harry Kane (1 every 116.4 mins) requires fewer minutes per goal than Carroll (1 every 133.2 mins).
