Terry set to join Aston Villa on training camp this week

According to The Birmingham Mail John Terry’s transfer to Aston Villa is all but complete, with the former Chelsea captain expected to fly out to Portugal to join the club’s training camp this week.

The 36-year-old, whose contract with his lifelong club came to an end at the weekend, is known to have a number of offers, both from the Premier League and abroad, but has reportedly been convinced by Steve Bruce to drop down to the Championship.

The ex-England skipper has shared photos of himself playing golf with the Aston Villa manager on holiday this summer and it is thought that Bruce’s relationship with the defender has played a crucial role in persuading Terry that Villa Park is the place for him.

The Blues legend was keen to avoid a potential meeting with his old employers next season and is believed to have agreed a lucrative one-year contract with the Midlands outfit that will include a considerable bonus should he help the club achieve promotion back to the top-flight.

The veteran was restricted to just six league starts under Antonio Conte last season, though he kept up his record of scoring in every Premier League campaign since the turn of the century with a goal in his penultimate appearance against Watford.
