Watford midfielder to undergo knee surgery

Watford have announced Nathaniel Chalobah will undergo surgery for a knee injury suffered in training last week.

Chalobah has been in good form for Watford since making the decision to leave Chelsea on a permanent basis over the summer but will now miss England’s upcoming internationals at the start of next month.

The 22-year-old earned his first senior call-up for England’s last batch of international fixtures but was unable to get off the bench against Malta and Slovakia at the start of September.

Gareth Southgate was expected to call on the services of the Watford midfielder once again when England face Slovenia and Lithuania at the start of next month, but Watford have confirmed he now faces a long spell on the sidelines.

“Midfielder Nathanial Chalobah will soon undergo surgery on a knee injury he suffered in training last week,” a statement read on Watford’s official website.

“Whilst we can’t put an exact timeline on his recovery, we are expecting to see him re-integrating into the squad well before the New Year.”

Only Richarlison (16) has attempted more shots in the Premier League for Watford this season than Chalobah (12).
