Team News

Hearts
Motherwell
  • Hearts boss Neil Critchley named three changes after the Jambos' derby defeat at Tynecastle for the first time in five years as they lost to Hibernian on Boxing Day, before they threw two points away in a 2-2 draw in Dingwall against Ross County.
  • Craig Gordon remained in goal for the Jambos on Sunday afternoon. Adam Forrester returned to the defence at right-back, with Daniel Oyegoke moving centrally to partner Kye Rowles and James Penrice continuing at left-back.
  • Jorge Grant replaced the suspended Cammy Devlin, to accompany Beni Baningime in midfield. Musa Drammeh and Blair Spittal joined Liam Boyce, in for the seemingly injured Lawrence Shankland, in support of teenage talent James Wilson who bagged a brace at the weekend.
  • Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell named three changes to the Steelmen side that battered on Boxing Day by Celtic 4-0 at Parkhead, before they bounced back with a controversial 2-2 draw against Rangers at Fir Park on Sunday afternoon.
  • Aston Oxborough remained in goal behind Shane Blaney, Dan Casey and Liam Gordon, who took Kofi Balmer's place, in the back three. Marvin Kaleta continued at right wing-back, with Ewan Wilson on the left-hand side once again.
  • Andy Halliday returned in midfield, at Tom Sparrow's expense, to join Lennon Miller and Harry Paton. Both Tawanda Maswanhise and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, who replaced Tony Watt in the Well's attack, scored against the Gers at the weekend.

Prediction

  • 11th place hosts the side in sixth, as 10 points separate a Hearts outfit who sit second-bottom and a Motherwell team that are in the top six spots of the Scottish Premiership table.
  • Every point is a prisoner for hosts Hearts, who will be devastated that they threw two away in Dingwall against relegation rivals Ross County. A victory over the Staggies would've sent the Jambos into 10th but they kick off 2025 in the relegation playoff place. For a club that finished third last year and played in European competition this season as a result, that is simply unacceptable.
  • Motherwell will also feel aggrieved at their draw at the weekend, as they went toe-to-toe with Rangers at Fir Park and drew in controversial circumstances. However, halfway through the Scottish Premiership season and in no sign of the trouble, the Well will wonder if they can maintain a solid first half of the league season and finish in the top six spots - or higher - in the league table.
  • Motherwell won their previous league meeting with Hearts this season, but results between the two teams at Tynecastle have been a mixed bag in recent campaigns so a share of the spoils wouldn't be surprising.
