Team News

Rangers
Celtic
  • Rangers manager Philippe Clement made seven changes after the Gers slipped to a 2-1 defeat to St Mirren in Paisley on Boxing Day, before they bounced back to a 2-2 draw with Motherwell at Fir Park on Sunday afternoon.
  • Jack Butland continued in goal, with club captain James Tavernier and Dujon Sterling the only two defenders to keep their places. The left-hand side of the back four saw Robin Propper and Ridvan Yilmaz replace Leon Balogun and Jefte.
  • Nico Raskin replaced Connor Barron to join Mohamed Diomande in front of the defence. A new trio of Oscar Cortes, Kieran Dowell and Danilo replaced Ianis Hagi, Nedim Bajrami and Vaclav Cerny in support of Cyriel Dessers - as opposed to Hamza Igamane in attack.
  • Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers named five changes to the Celts side that beat Motherwell 4-0 at Parkhead to return to winning ways on Boxing Day, before smashing St Johnstone by the same scoreline to conclude 2024 with another win.
  • Kasper Schmeichel continued in goal behind Cameron Carter-Vickers and Liam Scales at the heart of the Hoops' defence. Alex Valle and Alistair Johnston came in at left-back and right-back respectively in place of Greg Taylor and Anthony Ralston.
  • Club captain Callum McGregor made way for Reo Hatate to join Arne Engels and Paulo Bernardo in midfield. Hyun-Jun Yang was joined by Nicolas Kuhn in support of Kyogo Furuhashi, as Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah made way against Saints.

Prediction

  • The third Old Firm of the season takes place after Celtic won the first league meeting at Celtic Park and Rangers were left heartbroken at Hampden as they lost the League Cup final on penalties.
  • The Gers have won just one of their last three league games, so don't enter their derby day clash in the best of fettle. However, Rangers did rescue a point to maintain an impressive unbeaten league run against Motherwell having not lost to the Steelmen in the league since Boxing Day 2002. 14 points behind the league leaders, they are desperate for the bragging rights after this one.
  • Celtic enter this match after two dominant domestic displays against Motherwell and St Johnstone to round off 2024. The Hoops lost just two of their 50 matches in 2024, away to Hearts at Tynecastle and Borussia Dortmund in the Euro embarrassment, their fewest number of losses in a calendar year since 1919. Another win here would be a huge step towards the title.
  • Rangers' recent results are cause for concern, as they fell further behind the league leaders in the Scottish Premiership table, so Celtic should take care of their city rivals to kick off the new year in emphatic fashion.
