Team News

Motherwell
Aberdeen
  • Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell named three changes to the Steelmen side that drew 2-2 with Rangers at Fir Park, before they lost by a sole goal to Hearts at Tynecastle on Thursday afternoon in Edinburgh.
  • Aston Oxborough remained in goal behind Shane Blaney, Dan Casey and Liam Gordon in the back three. Stephen O'Donnell replaced Marvin Kaleta at right wing-back, with Ewan Wilson on the left-hand side once again.
  • Lennon Miller faces a few months on the sidelines with an ankle injury, so Andy Halliday and Harry Paton were chosen in midfield. Tom Sparrow took the talented teen's spot to join Tawanda Maswanhise in support of Tony Watt, who came in for the injured Apostolos Stamatelopoulos in attack.
  • Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin named four changes to the Dons team that suffered a late loss to Dundee United in a sole goal defeat at Tannadice, before they were beaten 2-1 by Ross County at Pittodrie in their first game of 2025.
  • Dimitar Mitov has picked up another injury, so Ross Doohan deputised in goal. Angus MacDonald replaced Slobodan Rubezic to join Gavin Molloy at the heart of the Dons' defence. Jack MacKenzie and Nicky Devlin remained as the full-backs.
  • Sivert Nilsen and Ante Palaversa made way in midfield, as club captain Graeme Shinnie was joined by Leighton Clarkson. Duk joined Jamie McGrath and Topi Keskinen in support of Ester Sokler in the Aberdeen attack, who was replaced in the first half by goalscorer Kevin Nisbet.

Prediction

  • Both Motherwell and Aberdeen kicked off 2025 with defeat in the Scottish Premiership, with both sides desperate to get back to winning ways at the weekend.
  • Motherwell's poor recent record away at Hearts continued, as they've now lost five of their last six trips to Tynecastle in the Scottish Premiership. The Well haven't won their opening league game of a calendar year since 2020 - a 1-0 win over Aberdeen - but are now winless in five years since (losing three). Having lost to Aberdeen at Pittodrie in September, the Steelmen want revenge.
  • Aberdeen's abysmal recent form has seen them fall to fourth place in the Scottish Premiership table, losing four league matches on the spin and five of their last six. The Dons haven't won a league game since a 4-1 victory at home to Dundee in the second week of November. It looked like a top-three finish was secure, but now there's an element of doubt surrounding the Reds.
  • Motherwell haven't beaten Aberdeen since a 3-2 victory at Pittodrie in August 2022, but look the more likely to win of these two teams given the Dons' dismal recent results.
