Team News

Dundee FC
Motherwell
  • Despite last season's promotion - which was sealed after a dramatic victory against Queen's Park on the last day of the season - it's all change at Dundee as Tony Docherty succeeds Gary Bowyer at the Dee.
  • In Sunday's 1-0 success over Inverness, which ultimately saw the Dark Blues crash out of the League Cup, only three players that were at the club last season - Lee Ashcroft, Jordan McGhee and Josh Mulligan - started.
  • Goalkeeper Jon McCracken, defensive duo Joe Shaughnessy and Antonio Portales, midfield trio Owen Beck, Scott Tiffoney and Malachi Boateng alongside strike duo Diego Pineda and Zach Robinson were the eight summer signings that started last weekend.
  • Stuart Kettlewell worked wonders at Motherwell in the 2022/23 campaign, totally transforming the Steelmen's season, as the Well were unfortunate to miss out on a spot in the top six of the Premiership table despite previously fearing relegation.
  • Senegalese defender Pape Souaré, the former Lille and Crystal Palace left-back, has signed for the Steelmen on an initial six-month basis. North Macedonian midfielder Davor Zdravkovski joins the Well from Cypriot side AEL Limassol.
  • There's huge pressure on the Steelmen's new strikers to emulate Kevin van Veen's superb season last year. Jonathan Obika has turned his temporary stay at Fir Park permanent, joined by Irish forward Conor Wilkinson who's signed from Walsall.

Prediction

  • Dundee have leapt up from the Championship and are wanting to avoid an immediate return. Meanwhile, Motherwell will hope that they can spring a surprise and push for top six this season.
  • Say whatever you like about Dundee Football Club but they never fail to amaze you. Despite sealing promotion at the very last hurdle, Gary Bowyer left the club for Tony Docherty - previously Derek McInnes' assistant at Aberdeen and Kilmarnock - to take his first step into management and begin to put his stamp on a previously successful squad which will attract lots of intrigue.
  • As for the visitors, they too are something of a curious case given they lost their talisman - Kevin van Veen - to his native Netherlands as he joined Groningen. The Dutchman's red-hot form was a key component as to the Well's rise from relegation trouble to a potential shot at a top-half finish. That didn't materialise but now Stuart Kettlwell has a clean slate at the start of the season.
  • Whilst there's pressure on the hosts to seize their opportunity as a newly-promoted team, the visitors were excellent on their travels last season and will want to continue that trend here.
