Team News

St. Johnstone
Hearts
  • Pressure in Perth is mounting already, as Steven MacLean's Saints were humiliated at home last weekend as they crashed out of the League Cup courtesy of a 4-0 defeat against last season's League 2 champions Stirling Albion.
  • Only goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov and striker Luke Jephcott have signed for St Johnstone this summer, from Cambridge United and Plymouth Argyle. Saints legend Murray Davidson retired this summer after a 14-year stay at McDiarmid Park.
  • A plethora of players left the club on free transfers, with Melker Hallberg and David Wotherspoon without clubs. Charlie Gilmour, Jamie Murphy, Michael O'Halloran and Theo Bair have joined Inverness, Ayr, Dunfermline and Motherwell.
  • Many Scottish football fans were left puzzled by Hearts' new managerial structure, with Frankie McAvoy named as the club's official new head coach and Steven Naismith taking the role of technical director.
  • Regardless of who's taking the reigns in Gorgie, it's been a quiet summer in Edinburgh's west end so far. Goalkeeper Michael McGovern has arrived as competition for Zander Clark, as Ross Stewart departs Hearts.
  • Centre-back Frankie Kent has joined the Jambos from Peterborough United. Calem Nieuwenhof has left Western Sydney Wanderers to sign in Edinburgh. However, the need for attacking arrivals is evident and the club will hope to announce a few soon.

Prediction

  • Both St Johnstone and Hearts were left underwhelmed at the end of last season, with both sides looking to kick on after disappointing campaigns in the 2022/23 season.
  • Saints have been flirting with relegation for a few seasons, with some fans adamant that this is the year where their Premiership stay comes to an end. If the League Cup campaign is anything to go by, it could prove another long season. But last season they were also eliminated in the group stage and avoided the relegation playoff place. Yet there's been a whole host of changes since.
  • Hearts will want to take advantage of Aberdeen competing on both a domestic and continental front, as the Dons enjoy what the Jambos did last season in gaining automatic European group stage football. The men in maroon will want to clinch Europa Conference League group stage football again themselves, but right now it's about getting off to a solid start in the league season.
  • Despite Saints' abysmal start, Hearts' record in Perth - last season aside - is historically woeful so perhaps the hosts can hold the visitors in their season opener.
