Team News

England
Ireland
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold and James Ward-Prowse have pulled out of the England squad through injury while Marcus Rashford won't link up with the Three Lions until Thursday at the very earliest as Manchester United continue to examine a shoulder injury.
  • Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez picked up an injury in training on Wednesday and is unlikely to feature here as a result.
  • Gareth Southgate has sensationally handed 17-year-old Jude Bellingham his first senior call-up, as a result of Ward-Prowse pulling out, following his promising start to life at Borussia Dortmund this season.
  • Reece James is in the squad despite being suspended for both of England's UEFA Nations League matches and can expect to start here.
  • Harry Maguire will miss England's UEFA Nations League tie away to Belgium through suspension and should therefore start here.
  • Jack Grealish and Declan Rice came through the Ireland set-up before switching to represent England, with the latter even winning three caps in friendly matches.
  • Gareth Southgate said no England goalkeeper is currently challenging Jordan Pickford for his No.1 spot in competitive matches but Nick Pope could get another run out here.
  • Some from Tottenham, Manchester City and Liverpool reported for England duty later than the rest and may not be involved from the start here.
  • While this is an important game for Ireland for obvious reasons, upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Wales and Bulgaria should take priority and Stephen Kenny should name a largely experimental side here.
  • Nottingham Forest defender Cyrus Christie has been called up to the Ireland squad to
  • replace Sheffield United's Enda Stevens.
  • Ireland have opted against replacing Stevens with a recognised left-back and someone like Robbie Brady may have to drop back as cover.
  • Sheffield United striker David McGoldrick retired from international duty at the end of the October international break.
  • Ireland have lost Premier League forwards Callum Robinson and Aaron Connolly on the eve of Thursday's game. The former has tested positive for COVID-19, while the later is injured. Both will be big misses during this international break.

Prediction

  • England haven't exactly been playing scintillating football of late and their 1-0 defeat at home to Denmark last time out was certainly coming. Gareth Southgate's head into Thursday's friendly with Ireland as clear favourites and will be expected to bounce back.
  • Ireland are in poor form and have been for some time. It's been just over a year since they last won a game and they've played six matches without success in that time, even failing to score in each of the last three.
  • Having only scored more than once on one occasion in the last nine outings, Ireland should not prove a real threat to England here. While you may not see the exciting football expected of England, a routine win is expected nonetheless.

  • WHY ARE THERE ANY FRIENDLIES RIGHT NOW!!1! PEOPLE DON'T CARE

  • @craigofficial To get more players injured or test positive.

  • @craigofficial you don't care*

  • @craigofficial Looks like an opportunity for the B team to impress and get into the starting 11. There shouldn't be an international break or Nations League right now in the first place.

  • @craigofficial Because in these worrying times, the world needs friendlies to come together and unite.

  • @uefalona How do you come together and unite ?

  • @neumi17 by spreading love, not hate. we are stronger together than we are apart.

  • Friendlies are best avoided. For example yesterday France were 1.15 odds to win at home but lost 2 -0.Most teams will make 7 + subs in their games.
