Team News

Burnley
Middlesbrough
  • Matthew Lowton will serve a one-match ban after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season last time out, which could see Jon Flanagan start on Boxing Day.
  • Johann Berg Gudmundsson stepped up his return from a hamstring problem for the U23s on Tuesday and could make the squad for Burnley's next game.
  • Steven Defour tends to be selected for home matches and is expected to return to the starting XI after only starting from the bench in each of Burnley's last two matches - both were away from home.
  • Viktor Fischer only lasted 12 minutes before being forced off with a knee injury in Middlesbrough's 3-0 win over Swansea last weekend. He isn't expected to recover in time for Monday's clash with Burnley.
  • Middlesbrough were boosted by the return of Gaston Ramirez and George Friend in their win over Swansea and both are expected to start here. James Husband, however, may continue to miss out.

Prediction

  • Burnley's results have gone off the boil of late but that is mainly due to the fact that four of their last six in the Premier League have been played away from home. The Clarets have enjoyed far more success on home soil this season that they have on the road and Sean Dyche will be looking to arrest their slump with a win at home against Middlesbrough on Boxing Day.
  • The Clarets have won four of their last six on home soil, although they failed to beat Boro in both of their league meetings last season and have only managed to score in one of their last four home encounters with Aitor Karanka's side.
  • Middlesbrough will be high on confidence after thrashing Swansea 3-0 in their last match. They are now four points clear of the bottom three and only three points off the top half of the table. However, home soil could prove invaluable to the end result here.
