Everton Next Manager Odds: Toffees favourite set for remarkable Goodison Park return

Sean Dyche’s role as Everton boss was always under threat once the takeover was confirmed last month. The Toffees, though, were ruthless in dismissing Dyche hours before their FA Cup third round meeting with Peterborough on Thursday night, a game the Merseyside outfit comfortably won as they claimed a 2-0 win to book a place in the next round.

Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman took interim charge in the week as goals from Beto and Iliman Ndiaye saw Everton progress to the fourth round of England’s famous cup competition. Attention now turns to hiring the new permanent manager. Everton are in a relegation scrap no doubt about that.

Ahead of crunch home ties against Aston Villa and Tottenham next week, the Toffees sit just a point above the relegation zone. Wolves have closed the gap to safety following the appointment of Vitor Pereira, while Ipswich are really starting to turn their fortunes around having taken a commendable four points off west London pair Chelsea and Fulham either side of New Year’s.

Getting a new manager in at the Goodison Park helm is of paramount importance for the club as they look to see in their first season at their new stadium in the Premier League rather than the Championship.

It’ll be an uphill task for the next manager. Everton do boast one of the better defensive records in the division having conceded just 25 league goals but they do struggle in front of goal. Indeed, only Southampton (12) have scored fewer goals than the Toffees (15) in England’s top tier this term. Rectifying their profligacy is of paramount importance if they are to start putting points on the board.

And Everton’s new owners the Friedkin Group do have a penchant for nostalgia if their Roma appointments are anything to go by. Following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho last summer, the Italian side hired Daniele De Rossi to steady the ship. Once De Rossi once shown the door, and his successor Ivan Juric was relieved of his duties, Claudio Ranieri returned to the Stadio Olimpico.

Everton are now expected to follow a similar path with David Moyes the overwhelming 1/4 favourite to take over at Goodison Park. Supporters are hoping he can live up to the ‘Moyesiah’ tag as they look to pull away from danger. Mourinho is the second favourite at 12/1, while former AC Milan boss Paulo Fonseca is in at 14/1.

Given the significant gulf in odds, you’d be foolish to back anyone by Moyes in this market with the 61-year-old believed to currently be in talks over a remarkable return to the club for his second stint on Merseyside.
