Serie A round-up: Juventus star just misses out on team of the week

Cristiano Ronaldo just missed out on a spot in the Serie A team of the week as his performance in Juventus’ 3-1 win over title rivals Napoli was overshadowed by teammate Mario Mandzukic. The Croat scored just five league goals last season, but a brace on Saturday means he is one goal short of matching that return after just six league outings this term. 

His two-goal salvo in the crunch clash in Turin came from just two shots, while on key pass, two aerial duels won and three tackles saw Mandzukic come away from the victory with the WhoScored man of the match award with a 8.93 rating. That was enough to secure third spot in the top rated players in gameweek seven of the season, with Suso trumping Mandzukic to second spot in Serie A. 

The AC Milan forward has been excellent in Serie A this season and scored his first and second goals of the campaign in their 4-1 win at Sassuolo on Sunday. The Spaniard’s two goals came from four shots in the comfortable victory and additional returns of one key pass and one successful dribble secured him a WhoScored rating of 9.13. 

Young Ivorian forward Christian Kouame takes top spot in the best-rated standings this week as he secured a WhoScored rating of 9.70 from Genoa’s hard-fought 2-1 win at Frosinone. The 20-year-old provided the two assists for in-form Krzysztof Piatek’s brace in the victory, those coming from five key passes, while two successful dribbles and 10 aerial duels won saw Kouame secure the WhoScored man of the match award. 

Propping up the ratings rankings this week is Lazio defender Martin Caceres. The Uruguayan was part of a three-man defence that shipped three in a 3-1 defeat to rivals Roma, with Caceres committing the error that resulted in Lorenzo Pellegrini’s goal on the stroke of half time. One tackle and no interceptions capped off a miserable afternoon for Caceres, who gained a WhoScored rating of just 4.88 from the loss.
