European Team of the Season: FWL - Neymar (Barcelona)

Just pipping Lionel Messi to top spot as the highest rated player in Europe’s top five leagues this season was the irrepressible Neymar, who gained a WhoScored.com rating of 8.52.

Many may have criticised the Brazil international over the course of the season, with a foolish red card in the 2-0 loss at Malaga that forced him to miss El Clasico the subject of much ire, but there is no denying that this campaign was Neymar’s best since his arrival in Spain.

As one of only eight players to reach double figures for both goals (13) and assists (11) in Europe's top 5 leagues, the 25-year-old’s output in attack ensured Barcelona maintained their title charge right up until the final day of the season. His trickery on the ball helped him play an influential role in final third for Barcelona’s famous scalpel sharp attacking triumvirate.

He completed more dribbles (168) than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues this term as opponents routinely struggled to keep Neymar at bay. While some may be critical of his final delivery, it’s an area of Neymar’s game that has been improved upon this term with 91 key passes among the top 10 players, while 11 assists was also a very respectable return for the flamboyant Brazil international.

His notable showings on the left flank helped him gain nine WhoScored.com man of the match awards this term, which, when Messi is your teammate, is a hugely commendable figure.

Like with Messi, the appointment of Ernesto Valverde brings about the chance to begin a new era in Barcelona folklore and Neymar has all makings to take his game to the next level. Considering Messi’s advancing years - even if he is still performing to a sickeningly high level - the chance is there for Neymar to step out of the Argentine’s shadow and really establish himself as the club’s key man in the years to come. This season was as good a foundation as any for the Brazilian to build upon.
