REVEALED: The most profitable teams from the 2018/19 Premier League season

Manchester City became the first team in a decade to successfully defend the Premier League title, edging Liverpool by just a point on the final day of the season.

After romping to the title the season before, City were unsurprisingly the pre-season favourites to lift the trophy this time around as well. True to the odds, City were victorious, followed by second favourites Liverpool.

Given the sums invested and the progress made by both clubs it’s unsurprising that they were the favourites in the Premier League title race and will be again next season.

What if, however, you bet £10 on your team winning every week? How much money would you have won or lost? Which side was the most profitable? Betway are on hand to reveal all in an interesting piece of analysis they have conducted using their historical data.

Given City and Liverpool combined for a record points total from first and second in a Premier League campaign (195), it’s unsurprising to discover there was not much money to be made betting on either during the season. In fact, both sides had odds available at evens or higher on just eight occasions combined.

While you would have made a marginal profit on City and Liverpool, the same cannot be said for their top-six rivals. Betting £10 on Tottenham to win every league game would have pocketed you just £17.10 in profit over the course of the campaign, while doing the same for Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United would actually have lost you money.

Chelsea finished the season with just one win in their last five league matches, while Arsenal lost four of their last seven. United, meanwhile, didn’t win any of their last five. Staking £10 on United to win every league game, for example, would have lost you £62.40.

It was very apparent early on in the season that Huddersfield were in for a tough season. The Terriers ended the season bottom of the league, 20 points off safety and with just three wins to their name. There were unsurprisingly the most unprofitable Premier League team this season, losing you £226.30 had you bet £10 on them to win every week.

Wolves were expected to have a good season after the way they played their way to promotion from the Championship last season but finishing seventh was beyond the expectations of many. In fact, Nuno’s side finished the season with the most points set by a newly promoted team (57) since Ipswich concluded the 2000/01 campaign with 66 points.

Given Wolves took 16 points off the top-six sides this season, more than any other side outside the top-six, it’s surprising to learn they weren’t the most profitable team in the division. Placing a £10 bet on Wolves to win every week would have returned a profit of £91.40, almost half what you would have made placing your faith in Crystal Palace each week.

The Eagles finished the season in 12th but were the only side to win away to champions City in the league, which partly explains why they are in the green so much. Palace were 18/1 to beat City, while they also pulled off other upsets, in terms of the odds, in wins away to Wolves in January (3/1) and at Arsenal in April (5/1).

Even though Cardiff were relegated, they were actually among the most profitable teams in the division, such their underdog status heading into every game. A £10 bet on Cardiff to win every league game this season would have surprisingly returned you £63.60. Neil Warnock’s side can consider themselves unlucky to go down after winning 10 league matches – the most by a relegated side since Bolton hit double figures in the 2011/12 campaign.
