The numbers behind rumoured Arsenal target Cristian Pavon

With Alexis Sanchez widely expected to leave sooner rather than later, the hunt is on for the Chilean’s replacement in north London. Manchester City are set to secure his services before the month is out with Arsenal needing to spend the money wisely to cover for his inevitable departure.

Reports emanating from Argentina now suggest that the Gunners will pay the $37m release clause in Cristian Pavon’s contract to sign the 21-year-old before the close of the January transfer window. League leaders Boca Juniors would be reluctant to lose their prized asset this month, but are aware they can do little to keep him to stay should Arsenal trigger that above release clause.

A WhoScored rating of 7.50 is the ninth best in the Superliga this season, with three goals and five assists a respectable return for the young attacker. Pavon is highly thought of in his native Argentina and his performances are understandably attracting interest this side of the Atlantic. Given his goalscoring and creative quality, the Argentine attacker has the means the cover Alexis’ impending Emirates departure.

No player has made more key passes from open play than Pavon (24) in the Superliga this season, with the youngster able to create chances for teammates without the need to bring others into play from set-pieces, which is a key trait for any side. Factor in his versatility – Pavon is able to play on either flank or up front – and Arsenal’s interest comes as little shock as they look to unearth another gem.

2.3 successful dribbles per game also ranks among the top 15 players in the Superliga this season, reinforcing a statistically calculated WhoScored strength of ‘dribbling’, though there remain rough edges to his game that need smoothing out to fully realise his immense potential.

A pass success rate of 73.1% suggests he needs to work on his all-round game, though his direct style of play means it's little shock that he has been earmarked as a long-term replacement for Alexis in north London. Arsenal would need to work fast to secure his services, though, with Juventus and Manchester City both believed to be interested parties, while Boca are hoping to stave off any interest ahead of the Copa Libertadores.

He isn't a household name in England at this point in time, but there’s a very good reason why a number of widely recognised teams on the continent are tracking Pavon’s progress. The youngster may not be fans’ first choice as an Alexis replacement, however he could be a shrewd pickup if rumours of Arsenal’s interest are proven to be correct.
