Chelsea duo earn perfect 10s to headline Premier League Team of the Week
Chelsea and Tottenham dominate the Premier League team of the week this week following resounding away wins at Southampton and Aston Villa, respectively. Norwich and Brighton are also represented as we take a look at the best XI.
Hugo Lloris (Tottenham) - 8.55
Tottenham went in at the break ahead at Villa Park on Saturday and they had Hugo Lloris to thank. The Frenchman was in excellent form at Aston Villa, making eight saves in Spurs' 4-0 win, including a stunning stop to deny Jacob Ramsey from close range as the Spurs skipper kicks off the team of the week with a WhoScored rating of 8.55.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea) - 8.34
With one eye on Chelsea's trip to Real Madrid, Thomas Tuchel rang the changes for Saturday's meeting with Southampton and the fringe stars didn't disappoint. One of those was Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who shone at right wing-back in the Blues' resounding 6-0 win at St. Mary's. Despite playing out of position, Loftus-Cheek earned a WhoScored rating of 8.34 as he made two tackles, two clearances and one interception to secure his spot in the side.
For the second week running, Grant Hanley makes the Premier League team of the week as the Scot put in another solid display for Norwich, this time in their 2-0 win over Burnley. Goals from Pierre Lees-Melou and Teemu Pukki means the Canaries remain in with a fighting chance of beating the drop, but it was Hanley's performance in defence that helped Dean Smith's side to all the spoils. Indeed, the 30-year-old won nine aerial duels and made 12 clearances as he, like Loftus-Cheek, returned a WhoScored rating of 8.34.
Andreas Christensen (Chelsea) - 8.13
The second of five Chelsea players to make the team of the week, Andreas Christensen joins Hanley at the heart of the defence in this XI. The Dane may be set for a summer exit, yet is putting in solid shifts for the Blues at the back, as noted by his WhoScored rating of 8.13 on Saturday. Five clearances and four tackles helped Christensen nail down his spot at the back.
Marcos Alonso (Chelsea) - 9.19
Rounding off the backline is the third Chelsea player in the side. Marcos Alonso may not be first choice at Stamford Bridge once Ben Chilwell returns, however the Spaniard was excellent at St. Mary's as he bagged his second league goal of the campaign. He netted with one of three shots and was unlucky not to add an assist as he made five key passes to help yield a WhoScored rating of 9.19.
Dejan Kulusevski (Tottenham) - 8.36
Making the Premier League team of the week once again, Dejan Kulusevski continues to go from strength-to-strength under Antonio Conte as he had a direct hand in two of Tottenham's four goals at Villa Park. The Swede netted past Emiliano Martinez shortly after the break, scoring with his only shot of the game, and turned provider for Son Heung-Min with 20 minutes to play as the 21-year-old garnered a WhoScored rating of 8.36.
The first of two players to return perfect WhoScored 10 ratings in the Premier League team of the week, Mason Mount was exceptional as Chelsea put Southampton to the sword on Saturday. The 23-year-old directly contributed to three of the Blues' six goals, hitting the back of the net with two of his three shots, all the while providing the assist for Marcos Alonso's opener. An additional four tackles sees Mount feature in the side as the Premier League player of the week.
Brighton picked up a huge result at Arsenal on Saturday as they left the Emirates with all the spoils in a 2-1 win in north London. Summer arrival Enock Mwepu was imperious in the middle of the park as he had a direct hand in both goals, teeing up Leandro Trossard on the half hour mark before scoring the winner midway through the second half from respective returns of one key pass and three shots. The Zambian worked tirelessly off the ball, too, as he made six interceptions and three tackles to partner Mount with a WhoScored rating of 9.61.
Son Heung-Min (Tottenham) - 9.61
Like Mwepu, Son Heung-Min also returned a WhoScored rating of 9.61 at the weekend as the South Korean netted a hat-trick in Tottenham's 4-0 win at Aston Villa. Only Mohamed Salah (20) has now scored more goals than Son (17) in the Premier League this season with the Spurs star hitting form at just the right time to aid their top four push.
The fourth and final Tottenham player in the side, Harry Kane may have failed to get on the scoresheet at Villa Park, but he registered assists number seven and eight for the season in the Midlands as he set up Dejan Kulusevski and Son Heung-Min after the restart. That brace of assists came from four key passes, while an additional three successful dribbles sees Kane make the XI with a WhoScored rating of 8.95.
Like Mount, Timo Werner also earned a perfect WhoScored 10 rating this weekend as he excelled in Chelsea's 6-0 win at Southampton. The German had more shots (8) than any other player this gameweek and while he netted twice in the victory, it should have been more for Werner, who struck the woodwork three times at St. Mary's to round off the team of the week.
