European Team of the Season: ST – Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo has secured a place up front in the WhoScored Team of the Season in Europe’s top five leagues.
After an indifferent first half to the season, Ronaldo has rediscovered his best goalscoring form since the turn of the year.
Of the 26 league goals Ronaldo netted this season, 22 were scored in 15 league appearances in 2018.
In fact, the Portugal international has scored at least three more goals than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues in this calendar year.
Ronaldo brought up his 50th goal in all competitions for club and country this season in last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal.
This would be classed a remarkable feat for any player, but it’s the eighth season in a row the 33-year-old has scored half a century of goals.
Madrid finished a disappointing 17 points adrift of league leaders Barcelona, but it’s no surprise that gap was much closer from the turn of the year when Ronaldo hit top form.
In fact, if the league table only accounted for results in 2018 then Madrid would only have finished three points behind Barcelona.
To put Ronaldo’s goalscoring feats in 2018 into perspective, the veteran striker scored more goals than Chelsea did as a team (21).
The Madrid No.7 finished the campaign with a WhoScored rating of 7.94 and will now hope to sign off this season with a third straight Champions League title on Saturday.
Salah has been better than him. Period. Better than Thauvin, Better than Coutinho. Him not being in the European Team of the Season is a discredit to the whole idea of naming a "team of the season"
