Premier League round-up: Everton midfielder grabs star man accolade
Liverpool’s 100% start to the season came to an end in their 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Saturday, with a late Daniel Sturridge wonder strike maintaining the Reds’ unbeaten start to the campaign. The stalemate at Stamford Bridge allowed Manchester City to end the weekend at the top of the table as they secured a comfortable 2-0 home win over Brighton to make it 19 points earned from an available 21.
Raheem Sterling played a central role in the comfortable win, with the England international netting on the half hour mark to get the ball rolling at the Etihad Stadium. He then turned provider midway through the second half as he registered the assist for Sergio Aguero’s strike as Sterling scored from one of his three shots and assisted from one of four key passes. Three successful dribbles and and 98.6% pass success rate saw him land a WhoScored rating of 9.07 to earn the man of the match award.
However, he was pipped to top spot as the best-rated player of the week by Everton star Gylfi Sigurdsson. The Icelander has endured a tough start to life at Everton after his big money arrival from Swansea, yet he looked every part the £40m man as he netted twice in the Toffees’ 3-0 win over Fulham. He could’ve had a hat-trick, too, having rattled a second half penalty against the crossbar. Six shots and five key passes was enough to secure a WhoScored rating of 9.27, better than any other player in gameweek seven.
Leicester star Harry Maguire rounds off the top three best-rated performers from the weekend’s Premier League action having netted in the Foxes’ 2-0 win over Newcastle. Having won four aerial duels, made two tackles, two interceptions and one clearance in the victory, the England international was good value for a WhoScored rating of 9.04.
At the other end of the scale, it was a performance to forget from Manchester United, who were torn apart by West Ham at the London Stadium in Saturday’s early kick off. Victor Lindelof was hauled off after just 57 minutes as he struggled with the Hammers’ attack, netting an own goal on the stroke of half time. During his time on the pitch, the Swede failed to make a tackle or interception as he returned a WhoScored rating of just 5.47.
