Chelsea and Tottenham stars among top 10 Championship deadline deals

While the top-flight clubs may have been unable to sign any players on Friday, plenty of Premier League youngsters went out on loan and the Championship sides in particular were keen to snap up a last minute deal.

We run down ten of the best deadline day loan signings to England’s second tier that you may have missed.

10) Saeid Ezatolahi (Rostov to Reading)

He may not be a household name but Iran international started against both Spain and Portugal at the World Cup and his physical presence in midfield was key to Carlos Queiroz’s side earning respectable results in said matches. Just 21, he’s been playing at a good level in Russia for some time now and his height and industry in midfield should be a real asset to the Royals.

9) George Saville (Millwall to Boro)

Arriving at Boro on loan with a deal to sign permanently in January, Saville will hope to make the same impact on Teeside as he did at Millwall last season. The midfielder’s all action style made him a fan favourite for the Lions, as well as an ability to chip in with important goals, scoring an impressive ten in total.

8) Marvin Johnson (Boro to Sheff Utd)

One player that was allowed to leave the Riverside on deadline day, Johnson didn’t have much joy at Boro last season following his arrival from Oxford and the winger will be hoping to prove he is capable at Championship level with Sheffield United. The 27-year-old did leave a parting gift, however, scoring and registering an assist as Tony Pulis’ side progressed past Rochdale in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

7) Jonathan Walters (Burnley to Ipswich)

Back where he really made a name for himself at Portman Road, Walters’ return will be well received despite having endured a torrid time at Burnley that saw the Ireland international make just three substitute appearances due to injury. The forward, now 34, enjoyed his best season at Ipswich over ten years ago now, scoring 13 times, but was a crowd favourite due to his tireless work ethic.

6) Geoff Cameron (Stoke to QPR)

QPR have been nothing short of shambolic at times this season, particularly at the back, so the arrival of versatile US international Cameron should prove a huge boost. The experienced defender can also play in midfield if need be and will give Steve McClaren some much needed steel to his mismatched side.

5) Josh Onomah (Spurs to Sheff Wed)

Onomah showed in glimpses last season what a good talent he is on loan at Villa but ultimately saw his playing time cut short but the return to form and fitness of Jack Grealish. The Spurs youngster started 20 league games nonetheless, scoring four times and registering three assists, but will hope to build on all of those figures with Wednesday this season.

4) Michael Hector (Chelsea to Sheff Wed)

Another new arrival at Hillsborough, Hector has proven a capable defender at Championship level with both Reading and Hull and, at 26, has the experience to shore up the Owls defence. Strong in the air and in the tackle, he’ll be hoping to help Jos Luhukay’s side to a top six finish.

3) Saidy Janko (Porto to Forest)

Another new arrival to the Championship from Portugal, Janko arrives from Porto having only joined the Liga NOS champions from Saint-Etienne in the summer. A former Manchester United academy player, the right-back is a Swiss U21 international and has had experience of the division with both Bolton and Barnsley in the past.

2) Chris Martin (Derby to Hull)

Martin may have endured a difficult couple of seasons but if the Scotland international can return to full fitness he is a proven goalscorer at this level and a shrewd addition for Hull. The 29-year-old started just nine league games last season but reached double figures in each of the last four beforehand in the Championship, scoring 56 times for Derby and a further ten on loan at Fulham.

1) Tammy Abraham (Chelsea to Villa)

It’s fair to say that Abraham was hopeful of making his mark at Chelsea this season, despite a difficult first Premier League campaign on loan at Swansea last time around, but Villa monitored the 20-year-old’s situation all summer and will offer him the sort of playing time the Blues couldn’t. Steve Bruce will hope that the youngster can rediscover the scoring touch that saw him star at Bristol City in 2016/17, bagging 23 Championship goals.
