Best XI: Juventus dominate Champions League team of the round

Juventus dominate WhoScored.com's Champions League team of the round after their dispatching of Barcelona at the quarter-final stage, with Real Madrid quickly following suit. 

The Old Lady were hugely impressive in their meetings with Barcelona with a 3-0 aggregate score enough to secure their spot in the semi-final of the Champions League. Given they kept kept clean sheets across both legs, becoming the first side to do that against Barcelona since Bayern Munich managed the feat in May 2013, it’s no shock that two of the four defenders turn out for the Series A giants. 

Dani Alves made his return to Camp Nou on Wednesday night and was hugely impressive across the two legs against his former side to earn a WhoScored rating of 7.66. Teammate Giorgio Chiellini features at the heart of the defence with his WhoScored rating (8.33) the fifth highest of those to feature in both games across the quarter-finals. He blocked three shots across two legs, a return bettered only by Mats Hummels and Saul Niguez (both 4). 

Chiellini is partnered at the back by Atletico Madrid centre-back Diego Godin, who excelled across both legs as Los Colchoneros secured their spot in the semi-finals of the Champions League for the third time in the last four seasons. The Uruguayan made more clearances (26) and won more aerial duels (14) than any other player across the two legs to deny Leicester. Marcelo rounds off the back four and deservedly so with his WhoScored rating (8.40) the second highest of the quarter-finals. 

The Brazilian made more key passes (10) than any other player - a fine feat for the marauding left-back - while no player made more interceptions than Marcelo (7) from the two games. His teammate Casemiro also makes the cut and while he was lucky to remain on the pitch in the second leg win over Bayern, he still made 15 tackles - more than any other player - as he protected the Real Madrid defence with aplomb. 

Juventus ace Miralem Pjanic features alongside Casemiro, with his fine showing against Barcelona at Camp Nou particularly memorable. He is joint with Marcelo on seven interceptions as his reading of the game came to the fore once more. Paulo Dybala rounds off the Juventus contingent. He may have struggled in the second leg against Barcelona, but he did the damage in the opening leg at the J Stadium, with his first half brace effectively killing the tie. 

Ousmane Dembele features on the right flank after his notable outings in both legs against Monaco. The Borussia Dortmund youngster may have started the second leg on the bench, but he did enough in the two games to earn a WhoScored rating of 8.36, with a goal and an assist, not to mention 12 successful dribbles, contributing to that. 

It was another youngster, however, who earned the plaudits, with Kylian Mbappe once more churning out a match-winning display. The teenage sensation now has five Champions League goals to his name this season, three of which were scored against Borussia Dortmund, to help earn a WhoScored rating of 8.40. His goalscoring exploits, however, were overshadowed by player of the round Cristiano Ronaldo, whose five goals over the two legs took him to 100 Champions League goals. His WhoScored rating across both games (9.26) was better than any other player to help Real Madrid reach a record-setting seventh successive semi-final in Europe’s elite club competition. 

Rounding off the XI is Bayern Munich shotstopper Manuel Neuer. While Gianluigi Buffon was busy earning his sixth and seventh clean sheets of the Champions League this season against Barcelona, Neuer was on hand to make 16 saves in Bayern’s double header with Real Madrid. His performances between the sticks gave the Bundesliga giants a fighting chance after they went down to 10-men in both games, yet it wasn’t to be for Bayern, who crashed out to a Ronaldo-inspired Real Madrid.
