Athletic secure Super Cup glory

Athletic Club have won the 2015 Spanish Super Cup after overcoming Barcelona 5-1 on aggregate.

The Basque outfit romped to victory on home turf last week, with an Aritz Aduriz hat-trick helping Athletic to a 4-0 win at San Mames.

Barcelona had hoped to make an unlikely comeback in the return leg at Camp Nou on Monday night and went into the interval 1-0 up courtesy of another Lionel Messi goal after a superb Luis Suarez assist.

However, the Blaugrana’s task was made all the more difficult with Gerard Pique’s second half red card, his first dismissal in all competitions since he received his marching orders against Real Madrid back in January 2013.

Athletic took full advantage of their one-man advantage when Aduriz drew his side level on the night with 15 minutes remaining, making it 4 goals in his last 2 meetings with Barcelona, having bagged 3 in his previous 19.

Substitute Kike Sola was sent off for a dangerous lunge on Javier Mascherano 5 minutes after coming on, but it needn’t have mattered as Athletic held out to win the second Supercopa de España in their history, and their first domestic trophy since 1984.
