Arsenal eye move for Bundesliga defender

Arsenal intend to keep spending money beyond Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this month with Mainz defender Abdou Diallo on their list of targets, reports The Daily Mirror.

The Gunners have already confirmed Mkhitaryan’s arrival from Manchester United and delegates of the club are currently in Germany trying to finalise Aubameyang’s move from Borussia Dortmund.

Arsenal’s chief negotiators may well end up staying in Germany as Wenger is interested in bolstering his defensive options with the signing of Diallo from Mainz.

The 21-year-old only joined Mainz from Monaco over the summer and has impressed Wenger despite the fact Sandro Schwarz’s side are currently one place above the bottom three.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for West Brom defender Jonny Evans this month, but like Manchester City, appear to be pursuing other targets for now.

Diallo has played 16 times for Mainz in the Bundesliga this season, playing a direct hand in three goals in his last seven appearances.

Of Mainz players that have featured in at least 10 league matches this term, Diallo averages the most tackles and interceptions combined per game (5).
