Team News

Motherwell
St. Johnstone
  • Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell named two changes to the Steelmen side that clinched an impressive 2-1 midweek victory over Dundee United at Tannadice, before they lost in the League Cup semi-final by the same scoreline.
  • Aston Oxborough continued in goal at Hampden behind Liam Gordon, who returned from suspension to face Rangers, Kofi Balmer and Dan Casey. Marvin Kaleta and Steve Seddon started at right wing-back and left wing-back respectively.
  • Andy Halliday, who gave the Steelmen the lead, joined Lennon Miller and Ewan Wilson in the middle of the park at Tom Sparrow's expense. Tawanda Maswanhise supported Apostolos Stamatelopoulos in attack on Sunday afternoon.
  • St Johnstone boss Simo Valakari named one change to the Saints side that was defeated 3-1 by St Mirren in their match in Paisley last midweek, before a 2-1 defeat to Hearts at McDiarmid Park on Saturday afternoon.
  • Barry Douglas started at left-back to join Jack Sanders, Kyle Cameron and Drey Wright in the back four behind Ross Sinclair in goal. Lewis Neilson was ineligible to face his parent club at the weekend, so made way for the veteran.
  • Jason Holt remained alongside Sven Sprangler with the two joined by Graham Carey as opposed to Matt Smith in the trio of midfielders that sat in front of the back four. Nicky Clark continued to support Benji Kimpioka and Adama Sidibeh up front.

Prediction

  • Six points separate Motherwell in fifth and St Johnstone sat in tenth, ahead of the two teams meeting at Fir Park on Saturday afternoon.
  • The Well were left heartbroken despite taking the lead at Hampden against Rangers, before the Gers turned the Scottish League Cup semi-final on its head, in the club's first semi-final since being runners-up in both cup competitions to Celtic in 2017/18. It's been a solid start to the season for the Steelmen, who will look to put the weekend behind them and get back to winning ways here.
  • St Johnstone missed out on the chance of winning back-to-back Scottish Premiership matches at McDiarmid Park for the first time in 2024, as Heart of Midlothian claimed a fourth successive victory over Saints in Perth. Seven straight defeats to the Jambos, Saints did at least equalise (having failed to score in their last four against Hearts) but will be disappointed at going on to lose.
  • Both teams will want to bounce back after the weekend's disappointment, but Motherwell left it late to beat Saints 2-1 in Perth back in August so will fancy repeating that feat this weekend.
